Montana's nickname, Big Sky Country, came from a novel written by
Montana native and Pulitzer Prize winning author A.B. Guthrie, Jr. The
novel, The Big Sky, was set in Montana in the 1830's and depicts the lives
of mountain men. It was first published in 1947 and continues to be one of
the most popular pieces of Montana literature to this day. The Big Sky
was later made into a movie and starred Kirk Douglas. Unfortunately, the
movie did not follow the book very closely and was not well received.
Ironically, Guthrie later wrote the screenplay for the critically acclaimed
movie Shane and won the Pulitzer Prize for his novel, The Way West.
Guthrie initially submitted the manuscript for The Big Sky with no title. His
editor noticed some biographical notes that Guthrie included. In the notes, Guthrie wrote that after his first day in Montana, his father had exclaimed, "Standing under the Big Sky, I feel free!" Thus, the title of the most
famous piece of Montana literature was born. So, sit back, relax, open up
some fine Montana literature and take a taste of The Big Sky. This wine is
made from black currants grown in the beautiful Big Sky Country near
Kalispell, Montana. This wine is a light amazingly flavorful, slightly dry,
medium bodied wine that is best served chilled.
